Prokofiev - String Quartet No.2

Sergei Prokofiev composed his Second String Quartet while living in Nalchik, almost a thousand miles south of Moscow in the north Caucasus . Along with other artists he was evacuated here following the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941.

The Carmirelli Quartet was one of the ensembles formed by Italian violinist Pina Carmirelli, and included her husband Arturo Bonucci on cello. She graduated from the Milan Conservatory in 1930 and as well as a long concert career was a professor of advanced studies at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. For a while she was first violin of the Italian chamber orchestra I Musici.
