Benny Goodman - London Date

It's getting on for two years since I last posted any track from Benny Goodman. Then it was two versions of Sing, Sing, Sing  - from 1937 and 1970. The 1970 track was recorded in Stockholm with a band made up of British musicians, formed initially for this late 1969 studio session for Philips.

I'd refer you to the earlier post and the sleeve notes below (click to enlarge the scan) for information about the band and the recording. Two tracks are given here - Burt Bacharach's This Guy's In Love With You, and Lennon-McCartney's Yesterday.

The video marks the first one with a new (to me) turntable - the Yamaha PX-3. This direct drive unit from the early 1980s features a parallel tracking tonearm much like the Technics SL-QL1 I have. Unlike the Technics though, this arm is designed for use with half-inch mount cartridges via a standard SME-style head-shell mounting - thus allowing a much wider range of cartridges to be used over the p-mount only Technics. Both arms work in a similar manner - with sensors detecting very small deflections in the tonearm and activating a motor which drives the tonearm sled along its travel keeping the tonearm parallel to the groove (or as close as is possible). Whether this system gives demonstrably better results than pivoted tonearms is open to debate. All tonearms have compromises somewhere along the way, and ultimately a micro-groove record is full if its own compromises. That they can sound so good - however played - compared to current digitally recorded music never ceases to amaze me!
