John Barry - music from James Bond films

It's somewhat ironic that the movie theme most associated with composer and arranger John Barry - the James Bond Theme - has disputed ownership, and in a court case Monty Norman was officially recognised as its composer. Barry had been brought into Dr.No after the producers were dissatisfied with Norman, and Barry's association with Bond lasted for twelve films - from Dr.No in 1962 to The Living Daylights in 1987. The title songs mostly had lyrics written by others.

By the time Barry had recorded this album in 1966, four Bond films had been made and the first side is devoted to music from these, ending with Barry's arrangement of Norman's famous theme. If the ending of this track is quite surprising it should be remembered that Barry's National Service had seen him playing the trumpet in the army, and he'd formed his own band as well as arranging for the big bands of Ted Heath and Jack Parnell.

Although James Bond films are those most associated with Barry, his awards and nominations - Academy, BAFTA, Golden Globes, Emmies, and Grammies - were almost exclusively for other films, from Born Free in 1966 which won the Oscar for both best score and best original song, to Chaplin in 1992. His scores for The Lion in Winter, Out Of Africa and Dances With Wolves all won best original score Oscars.

Here are the six Bond-related tracks on side 1, spiced up visually with stills from the movies, posters and lobby cards.
