On John Illsley's first solo album - 1984's Never Told A Soul - he was joined by Dire Straits buddies Mark Knopfler and Terry Williams for performances of seven of his own compositions. The one here, Northern Land, is about "The Troubles" in Northern Ireland - the sectarian conflict at its height in the 1970s and 1980s. The video includes news images from the time, and the song lyrics are given below.
The album had a lukewarm reception, mostly because of Illsley's vocals, and it's hard not to speculate that it was only his connection with Dire Straits - who were at the pinnacle of their success at the time - that persuaded the record company to release it. A second album, Glass, was to follow, which showed Illsley in more assured vocal form (one for a future video maybe).
Since Dire Straits, Illsley has recorded with Irish celtic-rock group Cunia, become an accomplished painter, and owns a pub and is a partner in two hotels.
