Composer Eduard Tubin (1905-1982) was one of Estonia's greatest composers, despite becoming a Swedish citizen after settling there, having fled Estonia when the Soviet Union (again) occupied the country in 1944. As a symphonist he followed in the tradition of Nordic composers like Sibelius and Nielsen, and others like Vaughan Williams, Moeran and Rubbra. Often using Estonian folk tunes, his music is nationalistic but not in a narrow way.
His Fifth Symphony, first performed in Stockholm in 1947 has been considered a view of Estonia's wartime tragedy, though Tubin denied a programme. The sleeve notes, with music examples are given below, as is a video about Tubin.
This recording, conducted by Estonian Neeme Järvi with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, formed part of a complete cycle by Järvi on BIS (with different orchestras).
