German singer Ute Lemper first made her name in the original Vienna cast of the musical Cats and then the Marlene Dietrich role Lola in The Blue Angel. With a voice well suited to cabaret music, albums of music by Dietrich, Edith Piaf, and Kurt Weill followed, and I first came across her with the album Illusions which had one of the most original settings of Thelonius Monk's 'Round Midnight.
I also have (on CD only) The Michael Nyman Songbook album which admirably showcases her remarkable voice.
The 1989 album Crimes Of The Heart was made when she was 26, and the video here has the final three songs from side 2. Ute Lemper is also an actor and an artist, and currently lives in New Yotk.
