Handel - Chandos Anthem 'Let God Arise'

Composed after Handel had become (in 1717) composer in residence at Cannons - the stately home in Middlesex - the set of anthems published simply as Anthems For Cannons, have become far better known as Chandos Anthems after the owner of Cannons - James Brydges, Earl of Carnarvon and First Duke Of Chandos.

The set of eleven anthems - twelve if you include one that has disputed provenance - neatly encapsulate Handel's style of music and have been said to present a comprehensive panorama of the composer's creative output.

Anthem no.11 - Let God Arise - has a text based on Psalms 68 and 76. See the scan of the sleevenote below for more details.

This 1966 Argo recording (on an original oval Argo label) was directed by David Willcocks, and recorded in the splendid acoustic of the Chapel of King's College, Cambridge. The harpsichord is played by Andrew Davis - now a famous conductor - who was an organ scholar at King's at the time of the recording.
