Khachaturian - Piano Concerto

It's getting on for two years since I posted music by Aram Khachaturian (1903-1978) - the Ballet Suite Gayaneh - so it was definitely time for more. So here is his Piano Concerto of 1936.

Its first performance - in the open air venue of Sokolniki Park in Moscow in 1937 - was less than ideal. There was only an upright piano available, the orchestra only had one rehearsal, and the conductor's glasses blew off during the performance so he had to conduct from memory. However Khachaturian described the performance of the pianist Lev Oborin - for whom he had written the concerto - as wonderful. The concerto went on to become a work that gained an international reputation.

The work is played on this 1964 Everest Recording - here in a remaster from Classic Records issued as 45rpm discs by Analogue Productions - by British pianist Peter Katin, and the London Symphony Orchestra under Hugo Rignold.
