Albéric Magnard (1865-1914) was a French composer who studied at the Paris Conservatoire with both Jules Massenet and Vincent d'Indy. His generally unsociable manner led to his music being overlooked, to some extent in his lifetime. Stylistically, his music is Romantic and post-Wagnerian, rather than impressionistic. The epithet "French Bruckner" has been applied to him.
Magnard's 4th Symphony dates from 1913 - only a year before he died as his house was burnt down in World War I. Apart from the excellent sleeve notes to this record (click on the scan below). this page is a good read on Magnard's four symphonies.
This 1983 performance by the Orchestre Du Capitole De Toulouse under Michel Plasson originates from French EMI (La Voix De Son Maître), and it surfaced a year later on this British HMV "Greensleeve" record.
