Jacobus Clemens non Papa was a Flemish Renaissance composer about whom many details - such as his dates - are shrouded in uncertainty if not mystery. Born somewhere around 1510-1515 he lived for about 45 years. Jacob Clemens became known as "non Papa" (not the Pope) possibly as joke by his publisher Tielman Susato.
Missa Pastores Quidnam Vidistis is a parody mass, that is one based on another piece of music, often secular. In this case, it was a Motet of the same name also by Clemens. This 1987 recording is by the Tallis Scholars, who have appeared here once before in Allegri's Miserere.
