Spohr - Clarinet Concerto No.2

Louis Spohr (1784-1859) was a prolific German composer who was popular in his time, but who fell into relative obscurity after his death. A mini-revival of his music in the mid to late 20th Century was helped greatly by this recording of his second Clarinet Concerto with a newly discovered full score by the soloist on this record, John Denman. His recording of Gerald Finzi's Clarinet Concerto was posted here last year.

Like a great many concertos written for a virtuoso player of the time, Spohr's clarinet works were written for Johann Hermstedt, who performed it first in 1810 under Spohr at Frankenhausen. Details of the music are in the sleeve note below, and for a really detailed view of the life and music of Louis Spohr, the Spohr Society of Great Britain is the place to go.
