The French composer Vincent D'Indy (1851-1931) studied under César Franck, and in turn had students including Magnard, Roussel, Milhaud and Honegger. His Symphony On A French Mountain Song was written in 1886, and started out as a Fantasy for piano and orchestra; the piano part remained in the completed piece.
Based on a folk song heard in the Cévennes mountains, the symphony has the alternative name of Symphonie Cévenole. It consists of three movements.
