| Olivier Messiaen |
One of the major composers of the 20th Century, Frenchman Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) is noted for his use of birdsong, and advanced harmonic and rhythmic techniques. Inspired by Eastern music and his synaesthesia (colour perception from musical chords), as well as his use of early electronic musical instruments in some works, Messiaen's output is truly unique.
During World War II Messiaen spent time in a German prisoner of war camp. In this unlikely setting he composed his Quatuor pour la fin du temps, scored for the instruments and players available to him in the camp - where it was first performed in January 1941. Inscriptions by Messiaen from the score are quoted in the album's gatefold sleeve notes (click on the scan below). This Carnegie Hall page "Five Things To Know About Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time" is an interesting read.
