Jean Sibelius's Fifth Symphony was commissioned by the government of Finland to honour the composer's 50th birthday, and was first performed in 1915 by the Helsinki Philharmonic. The work was revised in both 1916 and 1919 - as described in this detailed description of the work.
Paul Serotsky's personal take on the symphony is well worth reading in conjunction with the album sleeve notes reproduced below. Just over two years I posted the coupling on this album - the Seventh Symphony - and both received splendid performances from Lorin Maazel and the Vienna Philharmonic.
