Hans Christian Lumbye (1810-1874) was a Danish composer of mainly light music, known for his marches, polkas, and waltzes. Thought of by Danes as "The Strauss of The North" (sometimes referring to Johann Strauss as the "Lumbye of The South"!), Lumbye was for many years the music director the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen - where the live concert on this record was captured. Audience noise in this recording is largely absent except in the repetition of the Champagne Gallop as an encore. The music doesn't plumb great depths but is well-crafted, tuneful and enjoyable.
