By Tram From Hammersmith with Holst and Vaughan Williams

This 1978 album of music for wind orchestra was conducted by Denis Wick, a leading trombonist at the time, being principal trombonist of the London Symphony Orchestra for over 30 years as well as a teacher. He also ran his own company producing brass mouthpieces and mutes which is still going today.

Both Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams were composers who wrote for professional and amateur musicians alike. Both produced music for many different forces, including brass or wind bands, and both had a great interest in folk song.

The music contained here reflects this interest as well as showing some virtuosic writing for the ensemble, notably in Vaughan Williams' Toccata Marziale of 1924, and Holst's Hammersmith Prelude and Scherzo - commissioned by the BBC Military Band in 1930 and later rewritten for full orchestra.
