Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) was a Soviet-era Russian composer who was a towering figure over 20th Century music. Denounced by the Stalinist Soviet authorities for writing unpatriotic music - brought to a head by his 4th Symphony and the opera Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District - Shostakovich's reply was his 5th Symphony, a work outwardly conforming to the musical sensibilities of the era and one which has become a concert hall favourite.
By the time of Stalin's death, Shostakovich had completed his 10th Symphony - which was premiered in December 1953. Elements in the work depict Stalin and his oppressive regime, as is described in this appreciation of the work.
