Havergal Brian - Symphony No.9

Havergal Brian enthusiasts had to wait three years after the release of the Lyrita disc of Symphonies 6 and 16 (here is Symphony No.6) for the next record to come along - this 1978 Royal Liverpool Philharmonic disc of Symphonies 8 and 9.

Symphony No.9 dates from 1951 and had its first performance in a BBC broadcast conducted by Norman del Mar in 1958. The conductor of the present recording, Sir Charles Groves, gave performances of the 9th in Liverpool and London (at the BBC Proms) in 1976 before recording it at EMI's Abbey Road Studios in 1977 for release the following year. Ted Heaton on the Havergal Brian Society's website has these thoughts on the record. The release in the video is a 1988 reissue in HMV's Greensleeve English Heritage Series.
