Louis Frémaux - French Music

Louis Frémaux

Louis Frémaux
(1921-2017) was a French conductor who was principal conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra between 1969 and 1978. His successor, Simon Rattle, declared that Frémaux had built the CBSO into the "best French orchestra in the world". Although never a "household name" Frémaux made a reputation for himself partly from a series of wonderful recordings for EMI during his Birmingham tenure - mostly of French music but also of works by William Walton. I've already posted music by Jacques Ibert (his Symphonie Marine), and Jules Massenet - the Ballet Music from Le Cid, which was on a record most sought after for hi-fi demos.

This record of popular French music hardly needs an introduction. From side 2 here we have Dukas' The Sorcerer's Apprentice - made famous by Disney's Fantasia, Saint-Saëns Danse Macabre, and a Frenchman'a view of Spain - Chabrier's Rhapsody España.
