Rio-born Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) was a towering figure in Brazilian, and South American music in the 20th century. Absorbing influences from both Brazilian folk and European music - especially after visits to Paris, Villa-Lobos was a prolific composer, leaving over 2,000 works at the time of his death.
A meeting with Spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia on his European travels in the 1920s led directly to the works on this this record. The Guitar Concerto was written for, and dedicated to Segovia - who gave the premiere in Houston with Villa-Lobos conducting.
