I last posted a Beethoven Piano Concerto back in 2023, when it was No.5 (the "Emperor") from a set by Vladimir Ashkenazy and Georg Solti. This time though it's an earlier Decca recording of the Second Piano Concerto from Julius Katchen and Pierino Gamba with the LSO.
Born in 1926 in Long Branch, New Jersey, Katchen studied music with his grandparents - who had taught at both the Moscow and Warsaw conservatories, and also Philosophy at Haverford College in Pennsylvania. After touring Europe he decided to settle in Paris, saying "In France piano students come together constructively, and they can even become friends. They attend one another's concerts and applaud. In the US they go to hear a colleague play, but only in the hope of seeing him break his neck." Katchen died of cancer at the tragically early age of 42, in 1969.
Aside from the album sleeve notes - scanned below - this article by Timothy Judd is a useful introduction to the work.
