Bax - Symphony No.2

The journey through the symphonies of Arnold Bax, continues here with No.2 - which was given its premiere in Boston, conducted by it's dedicatee Serge Koussevitzky, in December 1929.

Bax wrote of the symphony "I put a great deal of time (and emotion) into the writing … it should be very broad indeed, with a kind of oppressive, catastrophic mood". An organ is employed solely for the effect that its bass pedals have in literally underscoring the foreboding mood of the music.

Like the Lyrita recording of Symphony No.1, this too is conducted in a splendidly passionate performance by Myer Fredman.
