The 1959 sessions for Kind Of Blue produced what is probably the best known jazz album of all time. Miles Davis had sketched out the numbers only a few hours before using modal scales rather than the complex chord progressions current at the time. Kind Of Blue was, to put it simply, a return to melody.
There have been many, many reissues of this famous album. The one presented here is a 1995 2LP issue from Classic Records. The first record presented the album as everyone knew it. But side one had been recorded with the tape machine running slightly slow, which meant on playback the pitch was a little high. So the second LP repeats side 1 at the correct pitch. On the second side of this record there's an alternate take of Flamenco Sketches that hadn't previously been issued, and as it had the side to itself there was space to cut it at 45rpm for increased sound quality. This is what we have here: contemplative, modal jazz to sooth the soul.
