Ultravox front-man Midge Ure released The Gift, his first (and most successful) solo album, in 1985 while the band were taking a break after releasing Lament the year before. Only one further Ultravox album (U-Vox) would be forthcoming until the band reformed in 2009.
Taking up where Ultravox left off, The Gift pushed the experimental electronic envelope even further while still being "new wave" in feel and mood. Three singles were released from the album, If I Was, That Certain Smile, and Wastelands. There's also a cover of Jethro Tull's Living In The Past.
For me, the stand-out sequence of tracks is at the beginning of side 2. Here are the first four tracks - Antilles, Wastelands, Edo, and The Chieftain - all except Wastelands being instrumental.
