Travelin' Light is a 1965 album from pianist/singer Shirley Horn. Though praised by Miles Davis, and popular with jazz critics, wider recognition of Shirley Horn's talents didn't come until much later.
As much a pianist as a singer, record companies - and Quincy Jones - tried turning Horn into a pure vocalist with mixed results. Her best music was always made when she accompanied herself. For this 1965 session all the songs are short and the talented musicians assembled for the date don't get much chance to shine. Nevertheless Frank Wess's flute and Kenny Burrell's guitar make telling contributions and fit well with Horn's nuanced, sometimes whispering delivery, making the slower romantic numbers feel especially intimate. This is most definitely not an album of power ballads!
Here is side 1 of the album, with the songs Travelin' Light, Sunday In New York, I Could Have Told You, Big City, I Want To Be With You and Some Of My Best Friends Are The Blues.
