Jimmy Smith - Au Private

Recorded at Manhattan Towers in New York City on two dates (in 1957 and 1958), House Party is a Jimmy Smith album featuring a roster of Blue Note artists in a free blowing session of numbers largely influenced by Charlie Parker.

The video is of Parker's Au Privave - misspelled on the sleeve and label as Au Private. It is of course fitting that Parker's muse hovers over this album as Jimmy Smith's organ style owes a great deal in it's phrasing and emotional content to Parker.

On coming to the organ from the piano, Smith, unlike many others, abandoned the piano and concentrated on developing a unique un-pianistic way of playing the organ which found great popularity - prompting Blue Note to release around 30 albums with Smith in his six years with the label. (He moved to Verve in 1962). It's been said that Jimmy Smith and Horace Silver albums basically paid Blue Note's bills, offsetting less commercially successful albums.

The fine lineup of players alongside Smith on Au Private (sic.) sees Lou Donaldson on alto, Lee Morgan on trumpet, "Tina" Brookes on tenor, Kenny Burrell on guitar, with Art Blakey's drums propelling them on. No bass player? Not needed, as Jimmy Smith's feet dance over the Hammond's pedals to provide the harmonic foundations for the proceedings.
