It's hard to believe that Donald Fagen is now 71, and that The Nightfly, his first solo album after Steely Dan's (first) split, is 37 years old as it sounds as fresh as the day it was released. One of the first fully digital pop recordings it wasn't served well by its first release on CD, but over the years it's popularity has been maintained by the quality of the songs and the fastidious production.
Discogs currently lists 122 different issues of The Nighfly, including regular vinyl issues (like my 2010 copy), an audiophile version from Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab, plus DVD-A, SACD, and Hybrid Dual Disc. Proof, if needed, that the appetite for this masterpiece hasn't waned over the years.
