Peter Warlock |
Born into a wealthy family (in London's Savoy Hotel) and educated at Eton and Oxford - though he was unhappy at both institutions, he ended up, briefly at University College, London before becoming a music critic for the Daily Mail newspaper. His early compositions had been heavily influenced by his fascination with the music of Frederick Delius - a composer for whom Warlock was to later write a biography.
Warlock's life has been well documented, and he benefits from a Society dedicated to his memory.
The Curlew - one of Warlock's best known works - is a song cycle based on the poetry of W.B.Yeats. Written for the unusual combination of string quartet plus flute and cor anglais, the work is a melancholy depiction of lost love. More information can be found in the sleeve notes below to this 1974 HMV recording featuring the lyrical tenor of Ian Partridge.
