Bizet - Suite from Carmen

Alsasian-born conductor Charles Munch recorded this Bizet disc in 1966, two years before he died. Most widely known for his tenure with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, he worked a lot in France, founding the Orchestre de Paris in 1967, and he had a reputation as an outstanding interpreter of French music.

Georges Bizet (1838-1875) based his opera Carmen on a novella by Prosper Mérimée, and after the first performance  in 1875 reviews were critical - the death of Carmen on stage, and the depictions of low life proved controversial. The traditions of opéra comique were stretched, and the work had to initially gain its reputation outside France, not being revived there until 1883.

The music for the Carmen has been acclaimed and it has given the classical repertoire some of its most popular  pieces.
