Miles Davis - Summertime

Miles Davis' collaboration with Gil Evans on music from George Gershwin's opera Porgy and Bess is one of the classic jazz albums that defined it's era.

Recorded at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York, in 1958, the album is a follow-up to the previous year's Davis/Evans album Miles Ahead. It continued Davis's exploration of modal jazz - freed from what he had called the "thick" chord heavy approach that be-bop had developed into.

Here is one of the opera's most recognisable numbers - Summertime - given a laid back swing setting over a subtle orchestral backdrop.
