Franz Schubert's short life - he died in 1828 aged 31 - was nevertheless a very productive one. He composed over 1,500 works in many genres - symphonies, opera, masses, chamber music and songs.
Written in the mid 1820's, when his health was already failing, the "Great" C major symphony had to wait until after Schubert's death for a professional performance. With a running time of up to an hour - depending upon which repeats are observed - the epithet "Great" has come to apply to its majestic proportions and grandeur - both qualities admirably brought out by this 1961 Columbia recording from Otto Klemperer and the Philharmonia, here on a reissue from EMI's French subsidiary Pathé Marconi.
