Charles Mingus - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat

Charles Mingus (1922-1979) was a bass player. composer, bandleader and pianist who holds a central position in the history of jazz music in the second half of the 20th Century, leaving a legacy that few musicians can rival. Inspired by Duke Ellington and gospel music, Mingus's music ranged from hard bop through free jazz to classical music and like Ellington he was an inspired arranger.

Mingus Ah Um was his debut album for Columbia, released in 1959. It is, possibly, Mingus's most iconic  album, and one of it's best known tracks is Goodbye Pork Pie Hat - an elegiac tribute to sax player Lester Young who had recently died. A different version of this number appeared on the 1964 Impulse! album Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus as Theme For Lester Young.
