Mozart's Symphony No.36 is known as the Linz because it was written in 1783 during a break in Linz while Mozart was travelling from Vienna to Salzburg. Being given hospitality by Count Thun, and having a concert laid on for him, Mozart rustled up this symphony in double quick time - actually four days! It was first performed in Linz on November 4th 1783, and had its Vienna premiere the following April.
The 1962 Columbia recording by Otto Klemperer and the Philharmonia was reissued in this 1976 HMV box of the late symphonies.
