Phoebe Snow - Poetry Man

It's some four years since I posted a track from Phoebe Snow (Random Time from the 1978 album Against The Grain) and it was high time for another one.

This time, it's her hit track Poetry Man from the self-titled debut album, dating from 1974.

Cartridge: Sumiko Starling MC
Phono amp: Graham Slee Accession MC
Turntable: CTC Classic 301 with SME M2-12R

  3. I found this post today and want to thank you. I have, "The Best of Phoebe Snow" on Columbia Records Canada. I was able to synch playback of your post of "Poetry Man" with my turntable using a small mixer to create a direct comparison.

For the YouTube playback I used a Solid State Logic SSL 2+ digital interface, routed to a Mackie 802-VLZ3 mixer and out to a 1988 Bryston amp (factory refurbished 2 years ago) into 2 all original JBL L-88 speakers (ca. 1972).

My phono playback was from a Technics SL-1200 MK7, Grado Sonata cartridge, Pro-Ject Tube Box S2 routed through the same mixer, amp and speakers.

So, with all things being roughly equal from the mixer to the speakers I was able to focus on the differences made by the cartridge and phono pre. The Sumiko Starling and the Graham Slee really stood out. In comparison, I should say that my Sonata is well used and past its prime. I enjoy the tube box for what it is...it's like being immersed in a really big warm bath but it's not as crisp, which may be the point of driving tubes. The Smuiko really makes the bells and chimes come through the mix beautifully and the dynamics and balance from highs to lows with so much space in between were remarkable. I chalk some of the flabbiness in my system to the tired old Grado which always tended to be a little dark. But the good news for me was that my amp and speakers were able to resolve the D/A converted YouTube audio into a very nicely detailed playback from top to bottom. Satisfactory to me anyway and something to aim for. So I appreciate the opportunity you gave me to make a useful comparison at home.

I have an older Graham Amp2 SE I put away some time ago. I'm thinking it's time to give it another listen and am considering the Ortofon Blue, or another cartridge / preamp pairing at a similar price point. Would you have any suggestions? You seem to have a knack for pairings.

    Thanks again.
