Alan Rawsthorne (1905-1971) is one of those British composers whose work is shamefully neglected in the concert hall and only marginally less so on record.

After abortive degree courses in dentistry and architecture, Rawsthorne was able to enrol at the Royal Manchester College of Music before continuing with piano studies in Poland and Germany. Following a teaching post at Dartington Hall he became a freelance composer - with success from orchestral and concerto works as well as film scores. His 2nd Piano Concerto dates from 1951, and is performed here in a 1966 recording with Denis Matthews as the soloist under Sir Malcolm Sargent and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
