The previous work I posted here from Bedřich Smetana was the cycle of six symphonic poems Ma Vlast which is undoubtedly Smetana's best known work along with his opera The Bartered Bride.
Written between 1882 and 1883, Smetana's Second String Quartet - published posthumously in 1889 - was given its first public performance in Prague in 1884. As the sleeve notes accompanying this 2014 Supraphon recording atest, Smetana's harmonic language in this late work influenced a generation of future European composers including Arnold Schoenberg.
