George Frideric Handel's music written at the request of King George I for a concert on the River Thames, was first performed in 1717, and consists of orchestral movements grouped in suites and commonly known as the Water Music.
One of Handel's most popular compositions, many "column inches" have been written about it including this piece written for the 2017 BBC Proms series entitled "What makes Handel's Water Music so great?". The excellent sleeve notes for this 1983 DG Archiv recording can be found below (click to enlarge).
