Vaughan Williams was an atheist, but embraced the wider cultural aspects of religion and religious music and combined them with his sense of mysticism. His 1921 Mass in G minor also looked back to English Renaissance polyphony, and with his impressionist harmonic palette it sounds both old and new in much the same way as his Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.
The Mass is dedicated to his friend Gustav Holst and the Whitsuntide Singers, and was first performed by the City of Birmingham Choir in 1922, with its first liturgical performance the following year in Westminster Cathedral.
