In Lee Morgan's short life - he was only 33 when his common-law wife Helen More shot him while on stage in Manhattan - he became one of the rising stars of jazz in the 1960s. His 1964 album The Sidewinder was such a success that it probably saved the Blue Note Label from bankruptcy, and the title track when released as a single made the pop charts. The tune has since become a jazz standard and covered numerous times.
