Gounod - Symphony No.1

French composer Charles Gounod (1818-1893) is most widely known for his operas - he wrote twelve. As far as symphonies are concerned, only two were completed, and the shadow of Beethoven looms to a greater or lesser extent over both. Two movements of what was to become Symphony No.1 were premiered in 1855, and their favourable reception encouraged Gounod to add two more to form a symphony.
