Arnold - Flute Concertos

Sir Malcolm Arnold

Sir Malcolm Arnold
(1921-2006) was a major British composer of the second half of the 20th Century. With a facility for writing good tunes many of his pieces could be considered "light music". Five ballets were commissioned by the Royal Ballet, and he was a prolific film composer - winning an Oscar for David Lean's The Bridge Over The River Kwai. His nine symphonies, along with concertos for flute, clarinet, guitar, cello, and pianos are his most significant works, but his most popular are his sets of dances.

Composed almost twenty years apart, his flute concertos date from 1954 and 1973. The second concerto was written for and first performed by the flautist on this record, Richard Adeney. Click on the sleeve note scan below for a description of the music.

More information on Malcolm Arnold can be found on the official website, and that of The Malcolm Arnold Society.
