Originating in 1978, Depeche Mode, as they were to become known by 1980, were one of the first bands to ditch all their instruments save for synthesisers and the resulting synth-pop sound gave them much success. Their fourth album Some Great Reward (1984) saw success in the US for the first time and the single People Are People reached no.13 in the Billboard Hot 100.
