Tippett - Symphony No.3

Sir Michael Tippett (1905-1998) was one of the most important and original British composers of the 20th Century. A noted self-critic, he destroyed his early compositions. But it was his Concerto for Double String Orchestra of 1939 that first came to the public's notice, and has remained his most popular and performed work ever since, That work's energy and madrigalian bounce, allied with its rhythmic freedom of irregular accents survived Tippett's changes of style as his compositional process developed, and a more refined and complex variant of this is evident in his Third Symphony - composed between 1970 and 1972. The premiere was given by the artists on this recording.

Two immediately apparent aspects of the work are the direct quotations from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony - with all the connotations of the link to Schiller's Ode To Joy, and its use of sung blues in the second half of the symphony.

The album notes and the sung text can be read by clicking on the scans below.
