Herbert Howells (1892-1983) is most known for his church music, but in the beginning his reputation was built on orchestral and chamber works - including the Piano Quartet of 1916. The Quartet owes a lot to Howells teacher at the Royal College of Music, Charles Villiers Stanford, who encouraged Howells to submit the work for the Carnegie Foundation's series of new British music, under whose auspices it was published.
Details of the piece can be found in the album sleeve notes below (click on the scan to read).
