Nielsen - Symphony No.5


Carl Nielsen's six symphonies are some of the most important and radical written in the 20th Century. His use of key conflicts helped form a personal idiom and he was certainly Denmark's most significant and original composer.

Back in 2017 I posted the Fourth Symphony from this complete set of the symphonies on Unicorn Records conducted by Ole Schmidt, and here is the Fifth Symphony.

Having it's premiere in Copenhagen in 1922, the symphony has only two movements, and one of the most striking attributes of it is the use of a snare drum in the first movement, where the player is directed to ad.lib a solo with the intent of breaking up the orchestra.

This record set came with a disc of talks by Nielsen scholar and composer Robert Simpson (who's Third Symphony can be heard here). The discussion of the Fifth Symphony can be heard below.
