Delius - Orchestral Music

Frederick Delius

Frederick Delius, a Yorkshire-born British composer (1862-1934) first found success in Germany before Thomas Beecham took his music up, making recordings and staging a Delius festival in London in 1929.

After 1918 Delius began suffering the effects of syphilis and became paralyzed and blind but able to complete new compositions with the help of Eric Fenby. His style is very personal, though influenced by Wagner (of whom Delius was a fervent disciple) in his use of chromaticism, and also Debussy. For much of his life Delius lived in France, in Grez-sur-Loing 40 miles outside Paris - where he died.

This recording, from conductor Vernon Handley who did a lot to bring Delius's music to concert halls and recording studios, contains four of Delius's more substantial orchestral pieces. Possibly the best known of these is Brigg Fair - a setting of a traditional Lincolnshire folk song collected by Percy Grainger who made a choral version heard by Delius.
