The Execution of Stepan Razin is a dramatic cantata for bass soloist, chorus and orchestra composed in 1964 by Dimitri Shostakovich. Using poetry by Yevgeny Yevtushenko, the cantata is about Cossack leader Stepan Razin who was beheaded after an uprising against the Tsar and Russian nobility in 1671.
Aside from the album sleeve notes reproduced below, The Listeners' Club has this page detailing the cantata, and for a more academic look at the work this PDF from the DSCH Journal is the place to visit.
