A.Tcherepnin - Symphony No.2

Alexander Tcherepnin

Alexander Tcherepnin (1899-1977) was a Russian born composer whose father Nikolai had been a pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov, and whose son Ivan and two grandsons were also composers.

The family left St.Petersburg after the Russian Revolution in 1917, going first to Tbilisi in Georgia, then Paris. After the World War II Tcherepnin settled in Chicago.

The Second Symphony was composed in 1947 but not orchestrated until Tcherepnin had moved to Chicago in 1951, where it was performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Rafael Kubelik.

This RCA record is a reissue from the Louisville Orchestra's own First Edition label. Founded in 1949 with support from the Rockefeller Foundation the label went on to issue almost 150 LPs from both new and established composers with more than 450 works by living composers represented in the subscription series.
