Music and Vinyl: Auber

This recording comes from the baton of Albert Wolff (1884-1970) - a French conductor most associated with the Opéra-Comique in Paris. For six years he was principal conductor of the Orchestre Lamoureux, and during this time he conducted the premiere of Roussel's Fourth Symphony - a work dedicated to him. His recordings span the years from 1928 to the 1960s, when he made mono, and later stereo recordings for Decca with the Paris Conservatoire Orchestra. One such project was overtures from Daniel-Francois-Esprit Auber, and these recordings seem to have made their first stereo appearance in this 1973 Decca Eclipse release.

Auber developed a partnership with librettist Eugène Scribe and the duo produced 39 operas over 41 years. Most of them were successful, and of the 39, 35 were opéra-comique, from which which most of the overtures on this record are taken from.
