Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) came from the French Basque town of Ciboure, near the Spanish border. His G major Piano Concerto bears the influence of Basque folk music combined with some jazz idioms. It was music, he said, designed to entertain rather than be profound. Composed between 1929 and 1931, the concerto was premiered in 1932 by Marguerite Long with the composer conducting the Orchestre Lamoureux in Paris.
As can be seen from the poster announcing the premier (click the image to enlarge) the new concerto was part of an all-Ravel programme.
This 1974 Decca recording was made by possibly the greatest Spanish pianist of her generation - Alicia de Larrocha (1923-2009).
